I was first introduced to Michelle Cho, while running on a treadmill at my gym. She was 10 feet in front of me on a television screen, and although I could not hear anything she was saying, I could see the footage of animals being killed for their fur. The images were beyond imaginable and although I knew about the process for retrieving fur, actually seeing it was beyond comprehension.

Monday morning, May 12, 2008. "Thousands Killed by Huge China Quake," the CNN headline reads. I've just taken a midterm, and I'm ready to clamber into the comfort of down feathers, but the news on my open Firefox browser raises quite the alarm.

Dad in China. Earthquake in China. Bad, bad combo.

I read on. "Nearly all the confirmed deaths were in Sichuan Province, but rescuers were hindered because roads linking it to the provincial capital, Chengdu, were damaged, Xinhua reported." Sichuan, Chengdu, Wenchuan.

If you didn’t know Danny Boyle from his previous films, The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Trainspotting, a telling story about heroin addiction, then you most likely know who he is today. Danny directed the award winning film Slumdog Millionaire turning Indian slums, Bollywood and Indian actors into Hollywood history. Danny Boyle has become a household name and it looks like it’s here to stay. His film is up for 10 Academy Awards, second in nominations behind Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I really enjoyed interviewing Danny Boyle because after all the press and interviews he has done for Slumdog Millionaire, he was still so expressive and excited to talk about his film. He’s understandably passionate about filmmaking, actors and people. He is also fascinated by other cultures and fell in love with Mumbai. Mr. Boyle plans to make a thriller there in the near future. I spoke to Danny for almost an hour even though I was only slotted for a half hour. He was very accommodating and wanted to make sure all my questions were answered to the greatest extent, something rare in Hollywood. Read our Q&A with Danny Boyle. Pay close attention to his advice for aspiring filmmakers. “Full on”, as Danny would say. Suwha Hong was born in Korea and traveled back and forth to the United States as a child. Like most Asian women, Suwha chose the classic Asian career path. She pursued a career in Law, graduating Cornell Law School, eventually practicing Corporate Law in New York City. I like to perform what I call "social experiments." As a child, for example, I might speak in a nonexistent foreign language at the grocery store and watch the confused expressions on the other shoppers' faces. When I was an undergraduate, I volunteered for a sociological experiment and happily agreed to fake an obsessive-compulsive disorder in public.

In composing the music for acclaimed director Danny Boyle's intoxicating new film Slumdog Millionaire, now playing in select theaters, A.R. Rahman has conjured the sound of a city, fusing the frenetic scramble of daily life in Mumbai, India into beautiful fugues that ride upon the dust clouds kicked up by its everyday people.

Now more than ever in the world of business we are tuning into the top business channels hoping to receive some sort of relief or hint of optimism from the never ending bloodbath. Pensions, 401K's and stock accounts are a quarter of the value they once were a year ago. Is this the end of overpaid and underperforming employees who lived in their own self important world, where senior managers made multi millions in bonuses while their decisions to layoff a $35,000 per year "low level" employee didn't keep them up at night?

Odd. This month, the market seemed... well, calmer. Things weren't as crazy as last month, but we still had pretty big stuff going on. Perhaps we're used to crazy.

This month, Paulson reversed his position on the TARP (the Troubled Asset Relief Program, aka the rescue plan), saying that the government wasn't going to buy troubled assets from banks. That sent the Dow Jones skidding to 7552.29, the lowest close in six years. Things got so bad that the government had to step in and save Citibank with a $20 billion bailout. And the day after that, Paulson announced a new $800 billion rescue package.

So what does all this mean? We'll get to that, but if you've been reading this column, you know that I'm a big believer in first understanding how we got here. Usually, that can tell us a lot about where we are going. So next, a detour into the events of the last few months.
