Steps To Flawless Skin: All About Cleansing

Although there are no shortcuts or simple one-size-fits-all solution to work your way towards your best possible skin, there are many steps you can take to gradually improve its texture, tone, radiance and overall appearance. The first step, the foundation to healthy skin begins with cleansing - the step that is often rushed and overlooked.

I personally take a 2 step approach to cleansing, especially since I live in a major city surrounded by pollution and many other unhealthy environmental elements. I first use an oil cleanser followed by a foamy gentle cleanser. If you wear foundation and makeup like I do most days of the week, it is very important to completely remove before continuing with the rest of your skin care routine. For removing makeup it is best to either use an oil cleanser or make up remover wipes to remove the top layer of dirt and makeup. I recommend oil (regardless of your skin type) since it tends to dissolve all dirt/makeup and is most effective. It also washes right off and if you are using a good oil cleanser, will not leave any residue. Cleansing properly also prepares the skin for the rest of the products you will layer on afterwards. If you do not properly cleanse and continue to use products, the combination of dirt, oil and external pollutants will most likely cause clogged pores and break outs.

With so may products on the market it can be a challenge to find the product that works best for your skin, sometimes it can feel like trial and error so hope to recommend what has been working for me thus far. This is also unique to each person and their preferences for texture like creamy, foamy, frothy, etc, along with how sensitive and porous your skin is. Most importantly is that your skin feels soft, clean but without it feeling stripped or dried out. If you have extremely oily skin you may consider using a cleanser with glycolic or salicylic acid to help control blemishes and acne. Pay close attention to fragrances and color of products since added chemicals may cause irritation.

I tend to rotate and always seem to be changing my cleanser because I love trying new products. I will mention my top 3 favorites of the moment and will update these in a few months with latest additions.

Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil
This cleansing oil has a huge following and it also melts even the toughest makeup off quickly without stripping your skin of its natural oils. It doesn't leave skin greasy and I love how soft and silky makes my skin feel.

Chanel Gel Pureté
This cleanser is very gentle and melts away dirt and impurities. If feels amazing on your skin and leaves it feeling fresh and clean with a fresh but not overwhelming scent. It feels very pure and almost like a lotion but effective. It's perfect for people with sensitive skin, and does not leave any leftover residue

Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Foam Cleanser
I'm a big fan of PTR since his formulations are well thought out and they are free of soap, sulfates and fragrance. It leaves my skin feeling super clean and easy to apply with its frothy consistency. It contains effective ingredients like wheat amino acids help to hydrate the skin while Vitamins A, C and E provide powerful antioxidant protection.

Cleansing Insider Tips:
* Pair a washcloth with your chosen cleanser to properly remove all debris
* Consider taking cleansing to the next level by investing in a face brush like the Clarisonic which is one of my favorite tools. It thoroughly cleanses while lightly exfoliating. I don't recommend using an oil cleanser with a brush. And be sure to change the brush head every 3 months so that bacteria does not accumulate
* Use luke warm water when removing cleanser, never hot, and finish with cold water to close your pores and prevent skin from drying out
* When drying skin, lightly tap. Do not pull or rub skin, and consider using a soft face spa towel or one with tight fibers.

Stay tuned for Step 2: Exfoliation for an in depth look to attaining flawless beautiful skin!
